Tink vs Memcached Exporter

memcached_exporter is Prometheus's usual Memcached scrape: a :9150 /metrics endpoint of memcached_up and STATS gauges. That is not a mechanic. Tink installs in one command, watches the Linux server, explains what is wrong, and helps you fix it.

memcached_exporter exposes memcached_* gauges. Tink answers “why is this VPS sick?”

Accidental sysadmins land on memcached_exporter because every cache + Prometheus diagram starts with a STATS scrape. Then the disk fills, nginx dies, and Grafana is quiet — nothing scraped, so nothing fired. An open 11211 is a Tink warning; it is not an exporter job.

When Memcached Exporter is the right choice

Keep memcached_exporter when you already want that exact job:

  • Prometheus Memcached scrapes — you need memcached_evictions in PromQL, not a mechanic.
  • Per-slab and command gauges — hit rate, bytes, and evictions matter more than host nginx, certs, and SSH on a quiet VPS.
  • An existing Prometheus + Grafana stack — memcached_exporter already ships, dashboards already graph, and someone owns Alertmanager.
  • Hosts that only export — you already run memcached_exporter next to Memcached, not a sick-box SSH loop.

The real cost of “just run memcached_exporter”

A cache exporter is in every Memcached + Prometheus diagram. A working ops loop for five Linux boxes is not:

  • An exported eviction metric still means you SSH in and change the box by hand
  • Host disk, nginx, certs, and SSH brute-force never appear unless you scraped those signals and Alertmanager paged
  • An open Memcached port (11211) is a Tink warning on every scan — memcached_exporter will keep scraping it
  • A single VPS with a dead memcached_exporter still needs a mechanic, not another scrape job
